Hire a Hero: Redux
A bipartisan effort to extend the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) to include the
National Guard and Reserve forces has been introduced by Sens. Kay R. Hagan (D-NC)
and Scott Brown (R-MA), with a companion bill in the House presented by Rep. Lynn
Jenkins (R-KS). This bill aims to bridge the gap that exists in the hire-ability
of members of the National Guard and Reserve because of their uncertain deployment
schedules. Says Rep. Jenkins:
“Due to their monthly service requirements and the possibility they could be called
into service overseas, the American heroes in our National Guard and Reserve can be
passed over for jobs. As it stands today, we provide tax incentives for the hiring
of felons, but ignore many of the men and women who protect our nation’s freedom.”
To be clear, this is not the first bill on this subject to called “Hire a Hero”.
Previously, two bills from the 110th congress (2007-2008: H.R. 3429 and S.1971), and
one from the 111th Congress (2009-2010: S.1971) were introduced under the same name.
