Webinar: I-9 Compliance Alert – E-Verify Deadline Is Looming
The deadline for reauthorization of E-Verify® is looming. Congress must pass the needed legislation by the Sep. 30 deadline.
If no law is passed, what might happen after Sep. 30 for employers who use E-Verify? Based on the attendees at a recent webinar addressing this topic, there’s considerable confusion. We asked the attendees – over 500 joined the event — what they expected. The group was evenly divided about the likely outcome. (see graphic)
As the speakers explained, based on past experience, direct users of E-Verify won’t be able to submit E-Verify cases at all. If you are an Equifax client, you will be able to submit cases and although you won’t get a response from E-Verify, we’ll hold each case in a queue and submit the cases when E-Verify is live again.
But bear in mind, as our guest speaker Montserrat Miller, partner at Arnall Golden Gregory LLP, reminded attendees, E-Verify reauthorization has no impact on your obligations to complete the Form I-9 for new hires. In order to maintain I-9 compliance, whether you are also submitting cases to E-Verify or not, you must complete a Form I-9 as always.
More background on the situation is available, as well as information about signature-waived permanent resident cards and other I-9 compliance updates in the 30-minute webinar recording.
