New Hire Notifications and Other State Requirements: Understanding the Compliance Management Challenge
A leading labor attorney spoke at a recent webinar about the fast-growing number of new hire reporting and notification requirements states are imposing on employers.
Chad Richter, a Partner with Jackson Lewis, told an audience of HR professionals about best practices to use in addressing the compliance management challenge: managing the process of monitoring, interpreting and enforcing the many new laws.
Julia Bailey, Sr. Director of Product Management, Equifax Workforce Solutions, helped Chad walk attendees through some of the state requirements. For example, they talked about the many states with wage notification requirements, and how the requirements varied. Also on the agenda were specific state requirements such as the pregnancy accommodation requirement of Washington, D.C. and the New Jersey conscientious employee law.
The attendees made it clear they are concerned about the proliferation of state notifications. In a live poll, the attendees said they were concerned about interpreting the laws.
They were even more concerned about the compliance management challenge created by proliferating state notifications. The challenge includes keeping track of new requirements as they were enacted, making sure the correct forms were being used throughout their organization, and retaining documentation of employee acknowledgements.
