Temporary Protected Status – Extensions Continue
Late last week, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced continued designations for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This follows the TPS extensions of Honduras and Nicaragua in October 2014. The most recent round of TPS designations provides eligible nationals of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone who are currently residing in the United States to apply for TPS with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The 18 month TPS designations for all three countries are effective 11/21/14 and the 180-day TPS registration period runs through 5/20/15. The registration period is key and must be met or eligible nationals may risk being ineligible for TPS. This includes Liberians currently covered under the two-year extension of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) based on President Obama’s 9/26/14 memorandum, though Liberians covered by DED who already possess or have applied for an EAD are not required to apply for one related to the new TPS designation.
