Will a last minute fiscal cliff deal include WOTC renewal?
House and Senate leadership will convene on the White House today to meet with President
Obama as efforts to avoid the “fiscal cliff” intensify. This same group, House Speaker
John Boehner, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, first met on November 16th at the White
House for the exact same discussion. Recall that the short term fate of WOTC is tied
to these negotiations as this issue must either be dealt with before the business
tax extenders can be addressed, or an extenders bill could be included in a fiscal
The Speaker’s office says that Boehner “will continue to stress that the House has
already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must
act”. However, the Senate is demanding that the House agrees to a bill that raises
taxes on individuals making over $250,000.
Understandably, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans want to make the first concession.
The mood of the Leadership coming out of this meeting will likely send a strong signal
back to the other members of the House and Senate of when and how this fiscal cliff
can be averted.
