WOTC Renewal – Expire Act Stalled
There have been recent rumors that a new path for WOTC renewal might be attached to a bill on the Senate floor for providing emergency funding for the highway trust fund. While every avenue for WOTC renewal should be pursued, it is unlikely that WOTC could be part of the aforementioned transportation bill. Certainly, Congress does not want to confront what would likely be considered another “Government Shutdown” and thus, the passage of the Transportation bill is likely to proceed – without WOTC or the tax extenders included.
Previously the best hope for renewal in the Senate was the Expire Act (Previous coverage here). Recall that the Senate voted 96 to 3 two months ago to proceed with the Expire Act – a bill to extend many expired measures, including the tax extenders. Both Senate Republicans and Democrats have not been able to agree on whether amendments therein would be allowed, and this bill is essentially stalled for now. In addition, as relayed previously, the House has decided to debate and pass each of the tax extenders individually and WOTC and the extenders have yet to make it on their docket.
Equifax continues its renewal and advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill by supporting legislation that extends the WOTC program and provides certainty in tax and business planning to companies that hire.
